According to Greg Schaaf’s book American Indian Jewelry I: 1,200 Artist Biographies, Hopi artist Clifton Mowa has been actively making Southwest Indian Jewelry since the early 1980s. He learned the craft at the Hopi Silvercraft Cooperative Guild. These classic overlay earrings are an indication that Mowa is a skilled jeweler. Mowa has incorporated several geometric designs within a square frame which is separated into two sections. One section contains a curved spiral motif, while the other has two straight angles. The oxidized background is texturized adding a lovely contrast to the silver overlay. They are signed with the artist’s hallmark, a quarter sun. These are for pierced ears.
