Stone Lithograph “Kachina Masks”

The year 1964 marked a significant shift in the artistic career of Patrick Swazo Hinds. This was when he began to delve into his Indian heritage through his art. While he continued to paint non-Indian subjects, he embarked on a new path that would establish him as a renowned Native American artist, arguably the most famous artist of any medium from Tesuque Pueblo. His talent was immediately recognized in 1964 when he was chosen for his first solo exhibition at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ, the first of many to come.

Artist signature of Patrick Swazo Hinds, Tesuque Pueblo PainterPatrick Swazo Hinds holds the distinction of being the first Southwest Indian artist to deviate from the traditional style of Indian painting. His fame as an artist transcended mediums and he emerged as the most celebrated artist from Tesuque Pueblo. Interestingly, many Indian artists who have pioneered new directions in art have done so after leaving their native villages and venturing into the world. However, most of them eventually returned to their roots and gained recognition as notable Indian artists, infusing the Indian art genre with a fresh style.

During his career, Swazo Hinds created stone lithographs at the Tamarind Institute of the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. One such piece is this lithograph, number 12 of 75 in the edition, executed in 1974 using brown ink on buff Arches Cover paper. Four lithographs in this set were initially printed together on a single sheet of paper, which was then torn apart to separate them, resulting in deckled edges. The image was printed in brown ink on stone, with Ben Q. Adams serving as the printmaker for this project. These four lithographs were the final ones Swazo produced at Tamarind before his untimely death at the age of 45.
