Percy Tsisete Sandy (1918-1974) Kai-Sa (Red Moon) signature

Mostly, this artist is known to collectors as Percy Sandy or Kai-Sa, but Sandy is a corruption of his name, which is Tsisete. Generally, however, he signed Percy Sandy or Kai-Sa. He was born at Zuni Pueblo in 1918 and attended elementary and secondary schools in Zuni. He attended Santa Fe Indian School to do postgraduate work. He later moved from Zuni to Taos, due to internal conflicts connected to his depiction of sensitive religious subjects. He died in Taos in 1974. This painting that he entitled “The Two Little Mudheads and the Corn Dancer” is rendered in real-life detail. The musculature of the Harvest Katsina’s legs is typical of the detail which Kai Sa presented. The two young Mudheads are playfully ignoring the Katsina who is overlooking their antics. The painting is signed in lower right Kai-Sa. Condition: The painting is in original condition Provenance: from the Katherine H. Rust collection.
