Artist signature of Ila Mae McAfee (1897-1995) Western Artist "Blue Corn" is a contemplative portrait by Ila McAfee, depicting a Pueblo woman seated with a micaceous jar — a clear indicator that she is from Taos Pueblo, as micaceous pottery is a hallmark of that community. While the title shares a name with the well-known San Ildefonso potter, this piece should not be mistaken as a reference to her. Instead, it stands as a tribute to the strength and presence of a Taos Pueblo woman, captured with McAfee's characteristic sensitivity and respect for her subjects.

This composition is somewhat rare for McAfee, who is more widely known for her depictions of animals and expansive Western landscapes. Here, she focuses on a single figure, clearly painted from a live model in traditional attire. The woman's quiet dignity is emphasized through McAfee's sensitive handling of paint — soft, nuanced transitions define the face and clothing, contrasted with the textured adobe wall behind her, which grounds the subject in a cultural place.

Born and raised on a ranch south of Gunnison, Colorado, Ila McAfee pursued formal art training in Los Angeles before marrying fellow artist Elmer Page Turner. After discovering Taos in 1926, the couple made it their home, building the White Horse Studio in 1929. McAfee spent over six decades there, creating works that reflected the landscapes, people, and spirit of the Southwest. She was named Taos Artist of the Year in 1981, a testament to her deep connection to the region and its visual storytelling. This painting is signed by the artist in the lower right, but it is not dated.
