This striking four-color polychrome jar is a masterful creation by Sofia Pino Medina (1932-2010) of Zia Pueblo. Showcasing an incredible command of natural pigments, Medina beautifully arranged a palette of cream, dark brown, red, and orange slips into a dynamic composition.

• The Zia Birds: The vessel features four charming, stylized Zia birds meticulously painted across its body. Two are rendered in deep, dark brown slip, while the other two are filled with a warm orange.

• The Innovative Rainbows: Framing the birds are bold, sweeping double rainbows. In a creative departure from the traditional technique of rendering rainbows in a single uniform color, Sofia alternated the bands with distinct orange and red slips, adding remarkable depth and visual vibration to the piece.

• Symbolism of Water: The sharp, geometric dark brown framing elements surrounding the birds explicitly symbolize water and rain-a vital motif traditionally utilized on Pueblo water jars.

• Symmetry & Balance: The bird and rainbow motifs are thoughtfully mirrored on opposite sides of the jar, creating a perfectly balanced visual rhythm from every angle.

Technical Mastery & Structure

The level of detail across the fine-line linework is exceptional, demonstrating absolute precision in brush control. The lower fifth of the jar transitions into a solid, brilliantly executed red stone-polished slip base. This smooth, unpainted foundation anchors the vibrant iconography above it, and it is on the underside of this red section that Sofia signed her name.

Material Integrity: In keeping with strict ancestral traditions, Sofia used only 100% natural clay, mineral, and plant-based pigments for her pottery, ensuring each piece remained tied to the earth.

Artist Legacy: The Medina Family Connection

Sofia Pino Medina married into the revered Medina potting family in 1948. Upon moving in with her husband, Rafael (1929-1998), she studied under his grandmother, Trinidad Medina-widely celebrated as one of the most talented and influential master potters in Zia Pueblo history. Sofia absorbed these historic techniques seamlessly, producing exceptional, award-winning museum-quality wares throughout her life.
