Artist Verlan Fred was a Hopi Pueblo Indian of the Greasewood and Roadrunner Clans.  He was an active carver of Katsina dolls since 1973. He lived on the Hopi Reservation in the Third Mesa Village of Bacavi.

He was born on May 19, 1957 and passed away May 23, 2019.  He was a brother of other Hopi Katsina doll carvers, Henry Fred, Jim Fred, Malcolm Fred, Nathan Fred and Glenn Fred.
