Artistry in Silver: The Leekya Legacy and the Exquisite Turquoise Buckle

The Zuni Pueblo husband and wife team of Robert and Bernice Leekya crafted this exquisite buckle, starting with a substantial shell-shaped piece of silver. Their meticulous artistry is evident in every detail: Scalloped Frame, Striking Turquoise, Leaf-Shaped Appliqué, and Silver Spheres.

The frame is deeply incised on all four sides, creating a natural ripple effect. The interior, like a finely woven silver mesh, bears small stamped squares—a testament to their craftsmanship.

On both the top and bottom, silver appliqué takes the form of stylized leaves fanning outward from their stems. These rectangular leaf bezels elegantly cradle the turquoise centerpieces. Beyond aesthetics, they serve a practical purpose, preventing the buckle from catching on loose clothing.

Three raw pieces of turquoise take center stage. Each stone was carefully set in a serrated bezel, allowing for a customized fit. The vibrant blue hues contrast beautifully with the silver. Completing the design, four silver appliqué spheres adorn the buckle—two on either side of the central turquoise piece.

Robert (1934-) and Bernice Leekya, hailing from Zuni Pueblo, have been creating jewelry since 1953. Robert, the son of renowned fetish carver Leekya Deyuse, learned his craft from his father. Their bold turquoise nugget jewelry and channel inlay work continue to captivate admirers.
