This Acoma Pueblo bowl was made by Marie Z. Chino. The highlight of the design is the bird with the elaborate tail. The bird was painted with brown pigment and meticulously covered with small white dots. The elongated and curving tail and the equally elaborate design above the bird's back are extraordinary. A wide band just below the rim is a continuous band of interlocking frets. The exterior of the bowl is covered in polished white slip. The bowl is signed Marie Z. Chino Acoma N.M.
Marie Z. Chino (1907-1982) is considered one of the significant ceramicists at Acoma and was the matriarch of a very talented family of potters. She is best known for her black-on-white pottery. Along with Lucy Lewis and Sarah Garcia, she led the revival of ancient pottery forms of the ancestral pueblo potters. She was one of the women who was inspirational in the movement to revive the use of ancient Mimbres designs on contemporary Acoma pottery.
Condition: very good condition with minor spalling.
Provenance: this Acoma Pueblo Black-on-white Bowl by Marie Z. Chino is from the estate of a resident of Santa Fe
