This large polychrome pottery jar was created by Acoma Pueblo potter Goldie Hayah.  At over 14 inches in diameter, it is a large and impressive piece.  The jar’s unique and appealing shape seems to be influenced equally by water jars, storage jars, and contemporary pottery vases.  It’s a successful amalgamation of all three, and its size leaves plenty of space for Hayah’s bold designs. The jar’s slip is a crisp white—fortunately untouched by spalling, abrasions, or any other issues.  Hayah’s large jar looks and feels well-crafted in every way.

Hayah’s primary design band covers the upper two thirds of the jar.  It features four repetitions of a large bird.  Each bird stands on the stem of a tall flower, which leans in toward a vertical column of leaves and geometric designs.  After each vertical design, the pattern starts over, with subtle variations in the details of each flower and bird.  Down below, a thin band made of geometric designs circles the jar’s underbody.  This bright and beautiful jar will appeal to anyone who appreciates contemporary Acoma wares.
