Most Cochiti Pueblo effigy vessels, similar to the style of this one, have an opening in the head or mouth for dispensing the contents, however, this one has it at the breast.  A Laguna Pueblo resident explained to Adobe Gallery that this one was made for seed distribution. That is, if one holds the figure by the handle and tilts it forward, the seeds would pour out into one’s other hand.

The design, other than that of a bird, is predominately sperm, all of whom are heading toward the fertility hole at the breast of the bird where the seeds would emerge.  The other body designs represent feathers of the bird. I have never before seen a pottery figurine like this one. It is quite unique. It’s nice to have gotten a Native’s explanation.

Condition: Structurally, the vessel is in excellent condition with only a small abrasion on the bird’s beak and some minor scratches.

Provenance: this Cochiti Pueblo Unique Effigy Bird Seed Jar is from a gentleman from Arizona
