Sadie Adams, Hopi Pueblo Pottery

Artist hallmark signature of Sadie Adams, Hopi Pueblo PotterThis red bowl, adorned with black pigment, is a prime example of Sadie Adams' pottery. It features a stylized Hopi eagle, a bird revered by the Hopi and commonly depicted in Pueblo dances, pottery, baskets, jewelry, and textiles. The design painted on the interior and outer body of the bowl is a revival of an ancient Sikyatki motif from the 20th century. The eagle holds significant spiritual, natural, and cultural symbolism for the Hopi, representing core values and playing vital roles in their traditions. The piece is signed "Sadie.Adams" with one of her flower hallmarks above the signature.

Hopi Pueblo artist Sadie Adams (1905-1995) was renowned among collectors and peers as an exceptional potter. Following her husband's death, she supported her family solely through her pottery sales, even funding her daughter's nursing education. A Hopi-Tewa of the Kachina and Parrot Clans, Sadie lived in the Tewa village at First Mesa on the Hopi Pueblo reservation in Arizona. Her Hopi name, Flower Girl (or Flower Woman), is reflected in her signature flower hallmark on her pottery.

Sadie Adams was highly versatile, creating a wide range of items including jars, bowls, lamps, tiles, cookie jars, plates, cups, and saucers, which contributed to her popularity among collectors. Her ability to craft diverse pieces ensured that she had something for everyone, cementing her legacy as a beloved and influential potter.
