Louis Naranjo Angel Storyteller Figurine [SOLD]

Physical and Stylistic Details

Louis Naranjo created this unique and wonderful "angel storyteller" surrounded by six smaller children/angels. The central figure is depicted seated with eyes closed and mouth open in song or storytelling, hands clasped in prayer. Two children rest on the upper arms, and four cluster around the knees and base.

Decoration and Pigments

The figurine was painted using natural Cochiti slips — a cream background, wild spinach (guaco) for black, and red/orange natural clay. The main figure features a spotted mantle, detailed terraced/cloud wing patterns, and traditional Cochiti Pueblo textile motifs along the waistline and rear hair tie.

Signature 

Signed on the underside in black slip: Louis Naranjo Cochiti, N.M. This pottery figurine was likely made in the early 1990s, towards the end of his career.

Artist and Attribution

Louis Naranjo (1932-1997) was a prominent Cochiti Pueblo potter.  He was renowned for his figurative clay sculptures, including storytellers, animals, nacimientos (nativity scenes), and whimsical characters.

Condition: very good condition

Provenance: this Louis Naranjo Angel Storyteller Figurine was purchased by the current owner, a California resident, in 2008 from a Santa Fe Gallery.
