This painting is a characteristic work by Rosa Margaret Curtis (1894-1960), a well-regarded artist in the early Santa Fe art scene. Her work is increasingly appreciated for its focus on the daily lives and culture of the Navajo and Pueblo peoples during the mid-20th century. The figure, draped in a vibrant, multi-colored striped blanket, is a classic Rosa Curtis motif. These blankets were a hallmark of Navajo attire during that era and are a recurring focal point in her compositions.

Her style is often described as "painterly," characterized by visible, expressive brushstrokes and a bold use of color. She used oil on board, applying paint in a way that captured the strong light and texture of the high desert. She placed the figure in the center-ground, set against natural elements like the golden-leaved cottonwood tree with a shade arbor seen in the background.

Western Artist signature of Rosa Margaret Curtis (1894-1960) Born in England, Curtis moved to New Mexico as a child. After studying art in London, she returned to Santa Fe in 1916 and became a permanent fixture of the local art community. Her most frequent subjects were the Navajo people, often depicted in their reservation environments. She was known for her "Navajo encampment" scenes, as well as depictions of Pueblo life, burros, and horses.

She exhibited regularly at the Museum of New Mexico starting in 1935 and had a major solo exhibition there in 1953.

This piece captures the "New Mexico Golden Age" style that Curtis helped define — a blend of European training and a deep, respectful fascination with the Indigenous cultures of the Southwest.
