This striking oil pastel drawing by P'otsúnú (Gerónima Cruz Montoya) is notable for its larger scale — considerably bigger than most of her works we've handled at Adobe Gallery. The piece features a majestic bird, possibly a turkey, rendered with a delicate, textured touch that reflects both confidence and nuance. While the subject retains a level of abstraction, the form evokes vitality and spirit, centered around a focal point near the bird's head.
The composition is constructed from two overlapping circular shapes, lending an abstract geometry to the piece. Leaf-like shapes extend from the bottom and curve gracefully into the bird's beak, integrating three prominent black dots that form a semi-circle as decorative elements. Seven small white dots, likely representing wing details, are created with thick applications of white pastel applied on end, offering a tactile, almost sculptural highlight in an otherwise tonal composition.
Though abstract in structure, the drawing pulses with energy and balance, showcasing Montoya's signature blend of form, symbolism, and elegant restraint.
Gerónima Cruz Montoya (1915-2015), known by her Tewa name P'otsúnú (or White Shell), was a groundbreaking artist and educator from Ohkay Owingeh (formerly San Juan Pueblo). A student of Dorothy Dunn at the Santa Fe Indian School, Montoya would go on to lead the school's art program herself, mentoring a generation of Native artists. She studied at the University of New Mexico, Claremont College, and the University of Albuquerque, and is best known for her refined depictions of Pueblo dancers and animals, often influenced by Mimbres iconography. Her work from the 1960s onward was praised for its clarity, simplicity, and expressive linework.
This 1982 pastel is a rare and powerful example of Montoya's work in abstraction — lyrical, assured, and deeply connected to both nature and cultural symbolism.
