Canyon de Chelly

"Canyon De Chelly" is an original oil painting by Ken Daggett, a painter who is known for excellent depictions of Northern New Mexico's landscapes. For this image, the plein air painter ventured a few hundred miles west to Canyon De Chelly in Arizona. Located on Navajo Nation tribal lands, this deep sandstone canyon houses Ancestral Puebloan ruins and is generally regarded as one of the most beautiful natural wonders in the Southwest. Inhabited by several Native American peoples for millennia, the area is dotted with prehistoric rock art.

Daggett places the viewer at the edge of a high cliff, looking down into the canyon. Sunlight washes over the sandstone walls, illuminating their pink, orange, and maroon tones. Greens and yellows wind through the center, signifying plant life on the canyon floor. In the background, dreamy blues and purples form distant mesas beneath a bright sky. Light and shadow work together beautifully on the canyon's massive walls. Daggett's depiction of this remarkable national monument succeeds at capturing its dramatic beauty.

The painting is signed “Ken Daggett” in the lower left. The painting is signed "Ken Daggett" in the lower left. It is numbered and titled "#3284 Canyon De Chelly" on verso. It is framed in a wide gold frame. "Canyon De Chelly" and Daggett's "Canyon Passage"  are sized and framed identically, and would make an excellent pairing.

Wester artist Ken Daggett is a painter who grew up in Southern California and now lives in New Mexico. Daggett's early artistic explorations were inspired by those of his grandmother. He studied art in high school courses and at Orange Coast College, but ultimately favored teaching himself over formal education. He mastered watercolors while working as a freelance architectural illustrator, and then switched to oils while exploring plein air painting. He lives and works in New Mexico, prolifically creating southwest landscape paintings.
