This magnificent jar has the elegant shape of the finest of Kewa (formerly Santo Domingo Pueblo) jars of the early twentieth century but was made by a contemporary potter of the early twenty-first century. The artist, Robert Tenorio, is still producing elegant and innovative pottery but this one was made about 20 years ago.

When viewing the jar from one position, it is composed of traditional Santo Domingo geometric designs. From another position, the viewer sees traditional Santo Domingo pictorial elements of birds and flowers. Robert cleverly combined the two styles in this one jar. The neck design of black diamonds forms six-pointed stars. The shoulder design is a row of upright and inverted black triangles. The main body design consists of traditional oval cream elements floating on a black background.

The jar could not be more elegant in its tall height and its decoration of two traditional styles. This jar is signed by artist Robert Tenorio (1950- ) on the bottom. The pictorial designs are a magnificent Santo Domingo polychrome bird with oval designs on a black background repeated on the bird's stomach in the same arrangement as seen on the body of the jar. The flower is a magnificent five-petal red one, outlined in black, that is standing upright. At its base are two black and white leaves.
