This original 1979 serigraph Coyote Woman by Harry Fonseca is an early and important work from his celebrated Coyote Series. While it is neither signed nor dated in pencil, it has his HF imprint which identifies it as one of the earliest versions of this subject. During a 1997 lecture at the Oakland Museum of Art, Fonseca noted that this piece was not yet referred to as Rose, the name he used for the character in later editions. Coyote is most often portrayed as male, but sometimes takes on a female form or uses disguise to get what he wants. That idea plays out clearly in this piece.
Here, Coyote is embodied as a self-assured, theatrical woman. She is stylish and bold, commanding attention with her pose and attitude. Rather than playing a supporting role, this Coyote is the star of her own show, full of humor and independence. Fonseca's vision offers a contemporary reading of the trickster figure while allowing viewers to see familiar stories expressed in new and empowering ways.
Harry Fonseca (1946-2006), of Nisenan Maidu, Hawaiian, and Portuguese descent, was born in Sacramento, California. He studied at Sacramento City College and briefly at Cal State University at Sacramento with Frank LaPena, but chose to step away from academic art training to pursue his own path. Fonseca's early work was deeply connected to his Maidu heritage, drawing inspiration from dance regalia, basketry patterns, and the traditional stories shared by his uncle.
Over a career that spanned nearly thirty years, Fonseca's work continually evolved. He remained open to new materials, ideas, and influences, blending tradition with innovation. His 1977 piece Creation Story became a foundational work, combining visual storytelling with symbolic structure. In Coyote Woman, viewers see the continuation of that narrative drive paired with sharp wit and a strong sense of identity. It is a piece that challenges, delights, and redefines what Native American art can be.
