Helen Hardin, Santa Clara Pueblo Painter

Artist Signature - Helen Hardin (1943-1984) Tsa-Sah-Wee-Eh - Little Standing SpruceHelen Hardin’s coordination between brain, eye, and hand was incredible.  She must have visualized in her head what image she wished to present, then set about putting designs, shape and colors together to produce her thoughts.  This painting must have originated with her thought of painting a bird and, from there, she just kept improvising design elements and selecting colors.  The result is, as one would expect from Helen, a magnificent eye-pleasing painting in soft colors.

The Santa Clara Pueblo bird is in the center of the painting with head feathers trailing off to the left, beak pointing to the right, wing feathers pointing down, and tail feathers where one would expect for them to be. Three of the four corners have Katsina face images and the fourth has a maze design.  As an overlay, there is a blue triangle and a red triangle, set to form a frame over the bird. Additionally, a one-inch wide border of varying colors sets a frame for the entire image.  The whole painting is overlaid with atomized applied colors to complement other colors of the painting.

Condition: appear to be in original condition

Provenance:  this Untitled Original Abstract Painting of a Bird is from the collection of a client from Colorado who purchased it years ago but does not recall the year.
