James Garcia Nampeyo is a great-grandson of Nampeyo of Hano and grandson of Fannie Nampeyo. His mother was Leah Garcia Nampeyo and his sister is Melda Nampeyo.
James made this jar for entry in our One Hundred Years of Hopi-Tewa Pottery exhibit but rain prevented him firing it in time for our opening of the exhibit. He now has delivered it to us. I do not recall ever having pottery by James in the 38 years of the gallery’s existence.
This jar is clear evidence of his talent as a potter. It is symmetrical in shape and beautifully polished. The design is a variety of prehistoric Sikyatki-inspired elements related to birds. Geometric designs fill in what would have been blank spaces. Execution of the painted lines is exceptional.
Condition: new and in original condition
Provenance: this Very Large Hopi-Tewa Polychrome Seed Jar came from the artist
