This katsina doll has attributes of a Zuni Pueblo Katsina, however, we have been unable to find a comparable katsina featured in the book Kachinas of the Zuni by Barton Wright. In consultation with a knowledgeable Zuni katsina expert, we were told that this is not an existing or known Zuni katsina. We are therefore posting it as a matter of importance to our clients who we feel would be interested in seeing this and, perhaps, interested in adding it to their collection.

We refrain from calling it a fake. Rather, we believe it is a carving made for the purpose of selling to a non-Native person. Perhaps the carver chose not to make an accurate representation of a Zuni katsina to be sold to a non-Native.

We hope this presentation is of interest and informative. We found it to be so.

What is a Kachina?
