Mescalero Apache baskets are generally in the form of trays, deep containers, and water bottles. This hand-woven basket is one of the deeper ones used for gathering nuts or other small objects. The foundation consists of two or more rods and the warp is made from yucca leaves. The yucca leaves are bleached to yellow. The coiling technique results in flat rather than round coils, making Mescalero baskets different from other Apache tribal baskets.

Simpler decorations are used on Mescalero baskets than used by Jicarilla or Western Apache basket makers. The decorations are subdued in color, most common being yellow and a soft reddish brown. This basket is quite typical in design with stacked reversed stepped triangles outlined in brown.
