Artist Image Source: Unknown - Juana Leno (1917-2000) Syo-ee-mee (Turquoise)Juana Leno (1917-2000) Syo-ee-mee (Turquoise) was one of the most accomplished potters at Acoma Pueblo in the 20th century.  For the most part, she was unequalled. Her work was flawless. This pottery jar with fine-lines placed to form star patterns is an extremely difficult one to layout and execute. It confounds logic that a potter would even attempt such a complicated design when something simpler would suffice.  That was the way Leno treated each of the items she made. Speed was not paramount, but quality was.

Artist Signature - Juana Leno (1917-2000) Syo-ee-mee (Turquoise)The vessel is extraordinarily thin-walled and the design was executed with precision.  The black lines are straight and parallel and equidistant. This is another “I don’t know how she did it” jar.  It clearly demonstrates that Leno was a potter of immense patience and talent.  She signed this jar Leno Acoma pottery.
