This classic regional Navajo weaving displays stylistic features that bridge the early Crystal (J.B. Moore) era and the Klagetoh / Ganado regional styles typical of the 1920s period. Under trader J.B. Moore (1896-1911), Crystal textiles were characterized by framed outer borders, central geometric medallions, and terraced or stepped stair-step designs.
The Klagetoh / Ganado influence displays a heavy, bold central diamond/hourglass motif outlined in rich aniline red against a field of natural wools (carded grey, natural brown, and hand-spun white) which became very prominent in the 1920s around Klagetoh and Ganado as weavers adapted earlier Crystal plate layouts.
Stepped Outer Border: The perimeter features a repeating, serrated/stepped tooth block motif in natural brown, dark brown/black, and natural white. This sawtooth border is a classic signature of early 20th-century Crystal designs.
Central Field & Symmetry: The center features a complex hourglass / stepped-diamond medallion. The inner design elements are highlighted with synthetic (aniline) red, while the remainder of the rug uses natural, undyed sheep's wool (hand-carded greys, tans, whites, and dark browns).
Frame & Edge: The perimeter is finished with a bold red outer band, framing the complex geometric interior. There is a "weavers pathway" line penetrating the border.
The structure of the rug is a tapestry weave with corner tassels and selvage typical of traditional Diné loom techniques
Condition: minor soiling on one side but overall in good condition.
Provenance: this Crystal Trading Post Stepped Pattern Navajo Rug is from the collection of a client from Santa Fe
