This is an early small jar by Effie Garcia, purchased in the 1990s. Effie and her husband Orville often collaborate on pottery production-Effie making the vessel and Orville executing the deep carved designs. The jar is signed only with Effie's name but there is so little space on the base that there is no room for acknowledging Orville's contribution.
The jar sits on a base of only ¾" diameter, however it sits well balanced. There is a polished rounded rim below which the carved designs appear. The stepped designs represent the mountains in the region. The black polished vessel has a beautiful dark black burnish. The edges of the carved design are clearly sanded perfectly. The base is signed Effie Garcia SCP.
Effie Garcia is the granddaughter of Rosita Velarde; daughter of Victoria Gutierrez; sister of Eugene Gutierrez, Sally Tafoya, Gail Tapia, Ethel Yazza, and Julie Gutierrez; wife of Orville Garcia. Her pottery has been recognized with awards at Santa Fe Indian Market since 1983.
