Inspired by Feast Day Ceremonies
When Linda Tafoya-Sanchez delivered this extraordinary jar to the gallery, she shared that she was inspired during the 2026 Santa Clara Feast Day activities to create a jar relating to the event. The design concept was inspired by the many dancers participating in the ceremony. The string of coral and turquoise beads represent the necklaces worn by the dancers. The carved designs represent the region in relation to the mountains, steps of the kivas, and the plea for rain. This jar is a testament to her technical mastery and creative innovation.
About the Artist: A Legendary Legacy
Linda Tafoya-Sanchez is a perfectionist whose attention to detail has made her an essential figure among contemporary Santa Clara Pueblo potters. She carries on a legendary family legacy as the daughter of Lee and Betty Tafoya and the granddaughter of the famed matriarch, Margaret Tafoya. She credits her aunt, Mary Esther Archuleta, with training her in the craft.
While deeply rooted in Santa Clara ceramic traditions, Tafoya-Sanchez is a true pioneer. She has expanded the boundaries of classic carved blackware by masterfully contrasting high-polish burnished surfaces with rich matte fields and integrating micaceous clay into her vessel architecture. She meticulously paints a liquid micaceous slip into the deep channels of her carved motifs and coats the entire interior with the same precious material. Because micaceous clay is not native to Santa Clara Pueblo-originating instead in the lands of Taos, Picuris, Nambe Pueblos and the Jicarilla Apache-her application of it represents a groundbreaking cross-cultural innovation. Rich in microscopic flakes of mica schist, this natural earthenware imparts a radiant metallic gold and copper shimmer, creating an extraordinary interplay of light, texture, and dimension.
A highly decorated artist, she has earned numerous awards at major exhibitions, including the Santa Fe Indian Market and the Heard Museum. Her notable accolades include a prestigious commission to create a piece presented to the Prince of Spain.
