This pottery owl figurine was made by Jemez Pueblo famous matriarch Persingula Gachupin in 2015. It is a mixture of matte and polished surfaces. The body was left in a matte finish, wings stone polished natural clay, top of head stone polished red clay, and the eyes in matte red clay. The body is beautifully painted with feathers of red and black matte and a pair of corn plants. The back of the owl is beautifully painted with paired triangular designs.
Persingula Gachupin (1910-1994) was the matriarch of a family of outstanding potters. She was the mother of Marie Romero and grandmother of Maxine Toya — both of whom were exceptional potters. She always used traditional clay and materials in her work. She, along with her daughter Marie Romero, were among the first potters at Jemez Pueblo to make storytellers and nacimientos.
