This Santa Clara Pueblo small round pottery seed jar by by Joseph Lonewolf is crawling with Mimbres jackrabbits, kokopelli flute players, and a more realistic rabbit. Each creature was uniquely rendered with the most precise detail. The globular shaped clay ball sits with an orientation to reveal three Mimbres jackrabbits with their huge ears in an upright position. They are enclosed in a circle of Greek key design. On the exterior of that circle, are four Kokopelli flute players with flutes raised up in performance. Those four are separated by four realistic-looking jackrabbits.
In the red polished underbody, almost overlooked, is a sgraffito dragonfly perched on a twig. It’s almost as if Lonewolf added it as a surprise. The seed pot is signed Joseph Lonewolf, with a wolf head between the two names, HO5I9, and the year 1979.
