David Baca, Santa Clara Pueblo Potter

Artist Signature - David Baca (1951- ) Yellow Mountain

This small redware piece was made in 1998 by Santa Clara Pueblo potter David Baca.  With its wide base, ribbed body, and small circular rim, the jar has an appealing form.  Its red color is deep and beautiful, and its polished exterior shines.  Baca’s work with this small jar is excellent.

With larger ribbed pottery and melon jars, we often see ribbed interiors that match the ribbed exteriors, suggesting that the potters create these textures by pushing clay in from the outside or out from the inside.  Here, the interior is smooth because Baca’s ribs are the result of carving, rather than one of the methods used for larger pieces.

The bottom of the jar is signed and dated David Baca Yellow Mountain, Santa Clara, 1-20-98 and marked with a mountain hallmark.

David Baca (1951- ) Yellow Mountain is a Santa Clara Pueblo potter.  Baca comes from a long line of talented artists.  He is the grandson of Severa Tafoya and the son of Angela Baca.  He has received many notable awards for his work, including accolades from Santa Fe Indian Market, the New Mexico State Fair, and the Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Arts and Crafts Fair.
