I often have made the statement that I don’t make statements. - Fritz Scholder

Fritz Scholder (1937-2005) was a world-famous artist whose works in a variety of media are displayed in museums and private collections around the world.  His first love—and the area in which he was formally trained—was painting.  He was a naturally gifted artist, however, and enjoyed a great deal of success with a wide variety of media. His mid-career explorations of printmaking and sculpting were particularly fruitful endeavors that resulted in a large and varied body of work.

Like his paintings and lithographs, Scholder’s drawings vary greatly in style and subject matter.  Some are representational, others are abstract.  Some are quite simple and appear to have been created very quickly, while others are more complex and appear to have required a great deal of foresight.  This untitled ink drawing, like many of his most unique and interesting works, falls somewhere in the middle.

It is a charming and beautiful abstract work that contains whatever the viewer wishes to see: a landscape, reclining human figures, or just a complex and beautiful arrangement of expressionist linework.  It is more than a strange and beautiful drawing—it is a unique glimpse into the mind of an artist who could not be kept within the confines of a single style or artistic movement.
