Norbert Peshlakai Modern Navajo Silver Ridged Bracelet [SOLD]

This silver bracelet by Diné of the Navajo Nation Jeweler Norbert Peshlakai is as much a tactile experience as it is visual. Sweeping lines transmute with texture and angles to become something different from one end of the piece to the other. As engaging as it is practical, this bracelet is a wearable sculpture in silver.

The top of this silver bangle is ridged in the center.  Perfectly parallel incisions were made along this ridge and are flanked with triangular cutouts, one on each side.  Each of these cutouts is followed along the ridge by a flattening out, in the shape of a pointed triangle.  This flattened area has been less deeply incised than the ridge, and creatively so resembling the bark of a tree.   

Each of the incised areas is balanced out in a pleasing way by untouched, shining silver sections.  All of this work comes together in a way that allows one to touch the bracelet, from one end to the other and experience many alternating textures strung together in a chic and untamed fashion—as if Peshlakai harnessed the natural rhythms of the Earth—immortalized in silver.  

Norbert Peshlakai (1953-) is a world-renowned artist.  He is a master goldsmith and works with silver. Stumbling upon jewelry making in college, his scope and capabilities flourished from there.  Peshlakai is known for using only the highest quality gemstones and minerals and for frequently telling a story through the imagery in his work.  Peshlakai is the Navajo word for silversmith, and Norbert is credited with creating a new form of artwork—silver jars and pots shaped like pottery.

Provenance: This Norbert Peshlakai Modern Navajo Silver Ridged Bracelet is from a private Michigan collection and was originally purchased at the Squash Blossom Gallery in Aspen, Colorado.
