Louis Naranjo, Cochiti Pueblo Potter

Artist Signature on the pads of the feet - Louis Naranjo, Cochiti Pueblo Potter

The Church at Cochiti Pueblo was built at the direction of the Franciscan Padres in the late 1500s. The Franciscans staffed it until the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, at which time it was abandoned until the re-conquest 12 years later. Since then, the Franciscans have administered to the Cochiti faithful continuously.

Louis Naranjo has, in this figurine, captured the essence of a Franciscan. He is dressed in the robe worn by them, with a sash tied around his waist. The haircut and beard are so typical of the Franciscans. He has shown him reading the Gospel to the members of the congregation.

Louis was a master at making meaningful figurines in true-to-life representations as well as making humorous figurines that made fun of tourists and others. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was able to express it in his work.

Provenance: Adobe Gallery purchased this figurine from Louis Naranjo in 1982 and sold it to the client from whom we now have it back.

Condition: this LOUIS NARANJO Pottery Figurine of Franciscan Padre Reading Scripture is in original condition.
