The World of Roxanne Swentzell: A Five-Part Narrative Suite
While internationally celebrated for her evocative bronze and clay sculptures, Roxanne Swentzell (Santa Clara Pueblo) is a master of visual storytelling in every medium she touches. We are proud to offer a rare collection of five individual etchings that provide an intimate, "micro-lens" view into the artist's environment and philosophy.
The Collection: A Journey Through Daily Life
Originally conceived as a series of six, these etchings depict the pillars of Swentzell's world. We are offering five works from the set:
-
The House | The Fields | The Studio | The Garden | The Feast
-
(Note: "The Canyon," the sixth image in the series, is not included.)
Each piece is numbered III/VII, marking this as an extremely limited edition. They are individually framed with the "full paper" visible, allowing the deckled edges and the integrity of the print to be fully appreciated.
Known for the bold, heavy forms of her sculptures, Swentzell reveals an entirely different side of her talent here: extraordinary fine-line detail. Each etching invites hours of observation. You'll find a woman walking toward her studio, another tending to the garden, and dancers in full regalia celebrating "The Feast." The plants, animals, and architectural details are rendered with such meticulous care that each scene feels like a living, breathing space.
Roxanne Swentzell's work is deeply rooted in the "complete spectrum of the human spirit." She believes much of modern humanity has grown "out of touch" with the environment; these etchings serve as a guide back to our surroundings. Her figures often express a full range of irrepressible moods — from contemplative silence to the joy of community.
Roxanne frequently centers female characters to help restore the balance of power between men and women, often infusing her work with a subtle, grounded sense of humor.
Born in 1962 into a renowned family of Santa Clara potters and sculptors, Roxanne began her journey with clay at age seven. A true prodigy, she attended the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) in Santa Fe while still in high school before continuing her studies at the Portland Museum Art School. Her work is held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) and is featured prominently at the Poeh Center's Tower Gallery in Pojoaque.
