In Praise of Pueblo Potters

Text by Don Dedera

Published in EXXON USA, 1973

Softcover, staple bound, magazine-size publication with numerous articles, but the one we are highlighting is the one on New Mexico pueblo potters.  The interior of the magazine is in very good condition, but the cover has separated from the staple binding.

This quarterly publication by Exxon USA of Houston, Texas, devoted the cover and a 9-page article by Don Dedera to contemporary pueblo potters of the time. The cover photograph features a jar by Stella Teller of Isleta Pueblo.

The article features photos of pottery by Nellie Bica of Zuni, Santana Melchor of Santo Domingo, Virginia Romero of Taos, Eudora Montoya of Santa Ana, Evelyn Cheromiah of Laguna, Juanita Arquero of Cochiti, Sofia Medina of Zia, Rose GonzalesTse-Pé Gonzales and Dora Tse-Pé, and Blue Corn of San Ildefonso, Dominguita Sisneros of San Juan, several pieces from Acoma, Sorenata Pino of Jemez, Joseph Lonewolf, Celestina Naranjo, Clara Suazo, and Margaret and Luther of Santa Clara, Virginia Duran of Picuris and Lenora Fragua of Jemez.

During my early years of collecting pueblo pottery, I visited the pueblos, purchased from the potters, and asked them to autograph books in which they or their works were published.  In this issue, I obtained autographs from Juanita Arquero, Evelyn Cheromiah, Rose Gonzales, Blue Corn, Dominguita Sisneros, Tomasita Montoya, and Celestina Naranjo.
