Made in a rather abstract style that was common in her earlier career, this is an intriguing etching by famous Native American artist Juane Quick-to-See Smith. The etching features three red teepee shapes along the left side, along with zigzag lines and other patterns around the rest of the image.
Using a variety of colors to create a contemplative palette, Smith included the likes of red, green, orange, magenta, and white in this piece. The focal points are with hues of red, although the other colors are not understated in any sense either. Thoughtful nuances are seen around the etching, with red circular dots, green squares, and orange lines. It is numbered IV/VIII.
Jaune Quick-to-See Smith was born in 1940 on the Confederated Salish Flathead Reservation in St. Ignatius, Montana. She was raised on the Flathead Reservation and spent her early life with her father, who was a horse trader. She drew her inspiration from a wide variety of sources, creating decidedly modern works that celebrate her Native heritage. In recent years, the value, visibility, and prominence of her works have risen meteorically. Most notably, the Whitney Museum of American Art featured a major retrospective exhibit titled Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: Memory Map.
