A Timeless Tradition - 50th Annual Holiday Nacimiento Exhibit

December 12, 2025 until January 07, 2026

Adobe Gallery's Annual Holiday Nacimiento Exhibit 2025 celebrates a unique fusion of Spanish and Pueblo cultures, featuring intricately crafted Nativity scenes, or "Nacimientos," created by Pueblo potters. A Nacimiento traditionally depicts the birth of Jesus, with the Holy Family, shepherds, and animals gathered in reverence. Originating from Spain, the tradition was introduced to the Pueblo cultures by Spanish missionaries in the 17th century and has since been embraced and transformed by Pueblo artists.

In this exhibition, the Nacimientos are more than just a reflection of the Christian holiday-they represent a harmonious blend of spiritual traditions. The Pueblo potters have integrated their cultural symbols and practices into these scenes, making the Holy Family not only Christian but also deeply Native American. This can be seen in the unique gifts presented to the infant Jesus. Instead of the traditional gold, frankincense, and myrrh, the Pueblo figures offer gifts such as bread, corn, and other elements rooted in their agricultural and spiritual life. These symbolic offerings reflect both reverence for the Holy Family and a connection to the land, celebrating the birth of Christ through the lens of Pueblo values.

This cultural adaptation exemplifies the Pueblo's ability to maintain their identity while incorporating elements of the Christian faith, creating a multifaceted tradition that continues to thrive today. Adobe Gallery's Nacimiento show is not only a visual delight but a testament to the enduring relationship between the Spanish and Pueblo cultures.

This exhibition offers a rare opportunity to explore a curated selection of Nacimientos with select pieces by Pueblo potters from Isleta, Santa Clara, Kewa, Cochiti, and other Pueblos.
